Since the middle of 2001, two friends have met for lunch in the Melbourne CBD nearly every Friday. There are hundreds of places to eat around here and we like to try new places when we can. After many nice meals, we came up with the idea of writing reviews. These are not formal exercises, and they are not really objective in any sense. We haven't got years of culinary training between us. No qualifications besides our taste buds and stomachs. We're just two ordinary guys who like to have lunch (okay, some people might argue with the "ordinary" tag). We figured, if we like a place, maybe others will want to hear about it and try it too.
We debated about how to "rate" the establishments we sample. Rather than trying to put an overall score against each place, or even rating the individual dishes, we thought we'd simply state whether we liked a place in terms of how likely we are to return there. You can expect some qualitative descriptions and impressions of things such as the dishes we tried, the ambience and decor, how comfortable the chairs were, value for money, and even what we thought of the restrooms.
The probability-of-returning rating given to each restaurant will be shown as a number out of 42. Why forty-two? Why not? (Note that the probability rating is affected by the fact that there are hundreds of places to eat around here.)
In addition, each review will feature a phrase from Dave, the Man of Few Words™, which sums up his experience of each restaurant.
We hope you enjoy reading our reviews and maybe get some ideas about where to eat.
January 2004 Update: I realise that we've been quiet for a while. This is due to the fact that we write these reviews for free, in our spare time, and there hasn't been much of that lately. Apologies, and we hope to be back in some semi-regular fashion now.
