It's All Happening.

(There was some concern about my last entry, particulary regarding the expectant mother with depression. Most of you know by now that it was not about Lisa. I would like to let you know that my friend's fears about not coping have proven unfounded, and that her new baby is delightful and easy and that things are going well.)

Where have I been for the last four months?

I left my old job at the beginning of February. Here's the short version, which is necessarily edited to prevent any detrimental repercussions to my career. This is, after all, a publicly accessible website.

I was dissatisfied with my old job for a variety of reasons. I started looking for other work, with the calculated blessing of one of the senior staff who could help me. Well, for reasons never really explained to me, the news made it out to other, less sympathetic senior staff, and shortly thereafter I was "encouraged" to leave. As in, Leave Right Now. Rather than put up a fight and just be miserable there anyway, I left. Sometimes being "right" just isn't worth the hassle.

So with a baby on the way, I spent another ten weeks or so getting dressed in a suit every few days to go and talk to people and try to convince them to convince other people to talk to me and maybe give me a job so that I could afford to buy nappies for a new baby. Problem is, you can't tell from the job postings which recruiters are wankers full of hot air and which ones are genuine good stuff. I encountered a few of both.

In the end, it didn't matter. One of the first places I contacted, tipped off by a friend who works there, was a company which didn't even have a job posted. This was back in January. The very same day I sent an "cold call" e-mail with my resume, I got a phone call saying "You're the kind of person we want, but we haven't got any jobs. Can you wait a couple of months?"

Well, I didn't actually want to wait, but you don't always get what you want, do you? I didn't expect to be out of work for so long. And I could have saved all that effort with the suit and tie, and just used it for the one interview that mattered!

The company is called Civica, and I will be working in the Library Systems division. I start the first week of May.

Speaking of the baby...

Lisa is full term this week, and quite ready to give up the whole incubation gig. We've been saying "Get OUT" at her belly for the last week. Things appear to be happening, but slowly, and she's in a bit of pain now, so we've booked an induction for Friday the 22nd. Happy Birthday Lisa!

Next time I update this site, hopefully I'll have photos of my daughter!
